Prostitution is regarded as the world’s oldest profession. Then why not start giving a proper salary to these women, and why not give them pension when they retire. After all they are sacrificing their body to keep the sexual desire of the man contended. Oh! Maybe I forgot that every sacrifice in our country go in vain.
Prostitution has actually started working in a professional level. They have made different stages for prostitution. In reality, this “oldest profession” falls into several categories. Yes, there are the street walkers whose lives are awful. However, there are also those women who provide sexual favors in massage parlors, small hotels and out of their own apartments. At the end of the spectrum are those women who are escorts or professional sex workers. Often, they work for themselves and charge sums of money that can run into thousands of dollars for a night out. Sometimes their clients are politicians, sports figures, and Hollywood movie stars. Sex trafficking is an international, multi billion dollar business involving criminals who kidnap and enslave girls. Girls as young as ten-years of age are snatched from their countries and sold into prostitution far away from their native homes.
Again, it’s important to avoid generalizing about how women get into prostitution. Studies show that large numbers of prostitutes were sexually abused during their childhood. It is the fact of the sexual abuse, more than anything else, that seems to underlay how and why some of them become prostitutes. These are the people most likely to be addicted to drugs as well as to develop, or already have, serious health problems, not the least of which is HIV as well as other STDs.
A prostitute has been defined as a tawaif or a devdasi as different times have called them in India- these are the factors which make it a oldest profession of the world, prostitution. It is a business $100 billion whose legal status varies from countries, an industry which is inarguably ubiquities in all the countries with their own variations, an industry whose history can be traced to 4000 years back to ancient Babylon. I think it will be bad to think that this oldest profession is driven by physical pleasure only, but is rather driven by economic and psychological distress which contributes immensely to the entry of young girls in the profession.
India has made prostitution legal but the other related activities such as soliciting, pimping and brothels are illegal. If we see the HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH reports there are more than 20 million prostitutes in India and as many as 35% of them enter at an age less than 10. Prostitution had been a theme for Indian literature and arts for centuries. Indian mythology has had many references of high- class prostitution in the form of celestial demigods acting as prostitutes.
But sadly the true face still lies hidden. Religious prostitutes, child prostitutes, rapes, inability to arrange marriage are some of the other reasons which push the woman on the downslide from which there is no coming back.
India is regarded as one of the biggest market for prostitution in Asia with Mumbai alone accommodation as many as 200,000 prostitutes. Trafficking, sex tourism and ‘clandestine’ nature of the industry is further imposing problems and spread of HIV/AIDS is on the rise at an alarming rate with woman being more prone to infection. Because of such nature and lack of regulatory body the real magnitude of severity of the actual situation cannot be comprehended.
The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act or PITA, a 1986 amendment of legislation passed in 1956 provides for the rehabilitation for the sex workers, who come forward and demand it, but what good does it serve if the families of these rescued women as they do not accept them back. These schemes need to have an empowering impact for these women. These women should be provided vocational training and education and their products should be marketed so that they do not face the same trouble all over again.
